Leap Day and Hooray!

It's leap day! And that's pretty much all I have to say about that.
In better news, I found out I got into graduate school today! So now I know what I'll be doing after I graduate. More school! Yay! But seriously, I'm really glad I got in and that when I leave Athens it'll be with a master's degree.

I had to unexpectedly meet with grad school people today so I'm glad I didn't look completely disheveled (except maybe my hair) and that I was decently covered up. I might look a bit eccentric - more so than most UGA students - but it's not too crazy and my boobs/thighs aren't out. They can be out on days I don't have to meet with people who decide things about my academic future.

Happy Wednesday everyone! And happy Leap Day!

Sort of Spring-y

It's pretty weird how fast February went by. I need to get my outfit posts all caught up! This outfit is from back at the beginning of this month. It was one of those outfits I threw together really quickly because I didn't know what to wear.

cardigan: delia*s
shoes, hat, necklace: forever 21

I did my hair in a bouffant thing today and I got a lot of nice comments about it, so that was pretty exciting. An old lady came up to me and said I look just like "the girl at the Oscars with the dark hair". I'm not sure who exactly she meant, but I said thank you. Any ideas who she could be talking about? Ha. Anyway, I really enjoy my hair like this and I'll be doing it again and hopefully I'll wear a cute outfit with it next time and take a picture of it too!

Happy Monday! Woo!

Blue Crushed Velvet

Hooray for Friday! I'm glad it's the weekend, but I have a lot of catching up on school reading to do this weekend. Lame.
This is my outfit from last Friday. I wore my velvet dress again. I'm going to have to wear it as much as possible before it gets too hot outside.

cardigan: mossimo; target
shoes: xhileration; target
belt: thrifted
necklace: from Italy
headband: forever 21

It appears that I'm staring into your soul. The more I look at that picture, the more scared I am. For that, I am sorry.

I really liked this yellow cardigan with my blue velvet dress. It got a bit annoying later on, though because the cardigan sleeves didn't want to pull all the way up if that makes any sense. The shoulders in the dress are too big on me so I think that contributed. You can't tell all that much when I wear something over them, though!

Looking at these pictures, I quite enjoy the length of this dress. I can't imagine how short it would be if I was a normal height, but it's perfect on me! Plus it's a little twirly and that's always fun.

Happy Friday everyone!

A Jeanie Outfit: Going to a Par-tay

I'm glad Jeanie likes clothes too so I can take pictures of her outfits and blog them. This one is from back when we went to that birthday party. She got all kinds of fun dresses from Modcloth during their Cabin Fever Sale. I wish I would've bought some stuff too!

dress: Modcloth
shoes: Forever 21
belt: thrifted

She wanted to show off her sparkle nails.

Speaking of nails, I'm so pumped for the China Glaze Hunger Games Capitol Colors collection to come out. I just hope I can snatch up a few colors before they're all gone! I expressed this excitement to Matt today. He rolled his eyes and looked over at the end table where the giant bags of polish inside have managed to slowly creep onto the table top. Oops.

Well! I'm still feeling under-the-weather and like I don't want to do anything in particular. I especially don't want to get ahead on school work even though I probably should! I'd rather eat the imitation Tagalongs I made and watch lots of TV. Hooray Wednesday!

Comfy Weekend Clothes + Gold Eyeliner

This outfit is from the end of January and it never got posted. So sad. It was a weekend outfit therefore comfy. (Actually that's not usually the case for my weekend clothes.) I also had time to actually think of some other way to do my makeup. It's easier just to do what I always do when it's the morning! Anyway, here's a comfy weekend outfit:

sweater; skirt: forever 21
scarf: lila boutique
shoes: xhileration; target
earrings: thrifted

Buttons.

Gold eyeliners? And my cool earrings. For your viewing pleasure.

Well, I did indeed come down with some sort of cold. I hope it doesn't get too much worse, but I have a feeling it will before it gets better. Everyone around me has been getting sick so it was pretty much inevitable. Although I managed not to catch swine flu when Matt had it a couple years back...so my logic is flawed.
I have no strong urges to really do anything this week. Luckily nothing is due and I have no exams! Wooo! Unluckily, I'm sick and sleepy. But I have a comfy couch to sit upon, a TV + computer in front of me, and a large supply of tea + coffee so I can't complain too much.

Happy Tuesday everyone!

Lemon Creme Brulee

As you may remember, I made lemon creme brulee for Valentine's day. It was delicious! Creme brulee sounds really fancy and like it'd be difficult to make but it really isn't. It's a basic custard and as long as you're patient and follow directions it'll come out very tasty. Plus it's so easy to make it whichever flavor you'd like.

Here's how to make some tasty lemon creme brulee:

This was supposed to fill 4 ramekins, but it ended up making 6. You need:
2 cups heavy cream
4 egg yolks
1/2 cup sugar + some to sprinkle on before you brulee the top
lemon zest

I like to lay out stuff as much as possible before I make something. Preheat the oven to 300 degrees Fahrenheit.

Add your cream to a saucepan, add your lemon zest (I used the zest from two lemons; make sure you only add the colorful outside part and not the bitter white pith of the lemon), and turn on the burner to medium heat.
If you didn't want lemon flavor then this is where you would add whatever flavor you'd like the creme brulee to be instead. Traditionally you would just add vanilla bean or vanilla extract for a basic creme brulee.

Continue warming up the cream, but don't let it boil.

While the cream is warming, separate the egg yolks. I just do this by cracking the egg into my hand and letting the whites run off. Just be gentle handling the eggs so the yolks don't crack while you're doing it.

Mix the yolks and 1/2 cup of sugar together. I moved mine to a bigger bowl because the cream has to be added to the yolks.

Is the cream warm? Hooray! Turn off the burner.

Since we used lemon zest it needs to be strained out of the cream. Just pour the warm cream into another bowl and sift it through a strainer.

Here's the part where you need to be patient and careful. You can't just dump the warm cream over the egg yolks because that'll scramble the eggs. Temper the cream into the egg/sugar mixture. This just means you pour a little bit of the cream into the eggs and stir it in, then pour a little more and continue mixing. This keeps the temperature of the eggs below cooking temperature. Repeat this until all the cream is incorporated into the eggs.

Now you can pour your custard mix into the ramekins. These have to be cooked in a water bath, so find some sort of oven proof dish (such as this casserole pan) to place your ramekins into. Fill it with warm water  half-way up the sides of the ramekins. Carefully place your pan in the oven. Cook these 35 or 40 minutes. Keep an eye on them.

They're done with they're set and a little jiggly in the middle. These are done! Now put them in the fridge until they're chilled. This will take a few hours so I like to make them the night before.

We pulled them out on Valentine's day, sprinkled some sugar on them, and used my kitchen torch to brulee the sugar. I used regular plain sugar, but it's best to use course sugar. I just didn't have any! If you don't have a kitchen torch you can also place these under the oven broiler instead. Let the sugar harden for a minute before you dig in.

And...you're done! We defrosted some mixed berries and put them on top. They kind of look creepy and gross in the picture, but I promise they're just berries that are all smooshed. The mix of lemon and berry was so tasty. I also cut up strawberries to put on top the next day when I had Jeanie over.

I hope this inspired you to try out making your own creme brulee! See? It isn't really that difficult!

Dots, Stripes, and Colorful Things

Somebody needs to tell me to stop wearing this yellow cardigan. I need a different bright color sometime soon, I think. I have a few outfits waiting to be posted and I now realize that about half of them include this cardigan. Oops. Oh well!

I actually got a random compliment when I wore this outfit, so that made me feel good! I loved the mix of stripes and polka dots and the bright colors, of course.

top; shorts: forever 21
cardigan; tights; shoes: target
belt: thrifted
tights: kmart
earrings: charming charlie's

Lightning bolt earrings. I love those things.

I had yet another exam today and I think I may be coming down with a cold, but oh well. It's almost worse waiting to get sick when everyone else around you is already coughing up a storm, right? I'd rather just get it over with!

I hope everyone had a nice week! My Valentine's day was pretty great and relaxing. The French onion soup turned out so tasty that we decided we're going to make it again next week! Hooray for learning new recipes!

Happy Friday!

Happy Happy Valentine's Day

I didn't know if I'd be able to get any pictures of my outfit today due to all the rain, but it let up a little. Hooray! I always enjoy dressing up for holidays. I actually had a completely different outfit planned for today but when I put it on I didn't like it. So here's the one I came up with after that:

tights: c/o Oasap.com
top, headband: forever 21
cardigan: old navy
skirt, belt: thrifted
shoes: daisy fuentes; kohls?
necklace: gift from Matt a couple years back

How do you like my cool new tights? I'd been really enjoying striped ones, so I'm glad to have a pair of my own. They get even more interesting at the top, but I'll show you that part in another outfit!

P.S.: Sorry about the poop on the ground. I guess the birds wanted to leave me a Valentine.

Now I realize I wore the same skirt and shoes for last Valentine's Day. Oh well! I put on the skirt I originally wanted to wear today and it was a bit big on me. So I figured I was having a skinny day and put on this skirt which is usually pretty tight. Compromise.

A heart for you.

This is my fifth Valentine's Day with my boyfriend. Isn't that crazy? I told him that was scary.

Even when I didn't have a valentine I enjoyed Valentine's day though. I don't understand people who hate on a holiday about love. Yeah, I know a lot of it is commercialized, but you don't have to buy anything. You get an excuse to eat as much chocolate (or other sweets) as you like and wear a gaudy amount of heart jewelry. And for those of you that are like, "I have no boyfriend", Valentine's Day doesn't have to be about romantic love. You have people you love in your life no matter if you have a significant other or not. Don't forget your friends and family! Valentine's Day is also a great way to break up the monotony of winter after December because it sure gets boring after all the holiday stuff is over.

I'm looking forward to dinner tonight. I'm making French onion soup with the melted cheese on top. The lemon creme brulee is cooling in the fridge too. I'm very much looking forward to that!

I hope you enjoy your Tuesday! Happy Valentine's Day!

Forgot These - Happy Weekend!

Just a little post with pictures from a few weekends back. I don't know why I forgot to post these!
We had both had our hair nicely done this day. (Thanks Mom!) I already almost need my bangs cut again.

You like the Zappa shirt we thrifted for a dollar? I think it's funny.

We have to have pictures in front of the front door just like when we were little. Also: George. He wanted to come outside because we were out there, but he didn't realize it was drizzling. He walked away a minute later so I guess he noticed. He doesn't like to be rained on.

Also, I look kind of perturbed and weird in the next picture. Enjoy:

Anyway, I hope everyone had a nice weekend! I actually had a full one, so it was nice. It included a fancy Valentine dinner with Matt at 5 & 10, two trips to Kroger, a movie at a Jewish film festival downtown, pep band-ing at a basketball game, and freshly baked scones.

Hooray for the weekend!

Mad Me

I sure am glad it's Friday! I've finished my two exams of the day and now I can have a memory dump. Even better, I can catch up on blog stuff! Hooray for Friday.

This outfit was worn to a birthday party I went to last weekend. I was a little fancy, but oh well. Also, I did my hair all by myself which is pretty impressive for me. I've been spoiled with a hairdresser mom so I never really had to learn how to do anything special to my hair. It took me forever to get it decent-looking, but I was proud of myself!

dress; earrings; bow: forever 21
shoes: shoe carnival?
belt: thrifted
necklace: italy from Jeanie

This was supposed to be a luxurious pose, but it just looks sleepy.

I got a few comments that I looked like I was from Mad Men. I'll take that as a compliment because I love those outfits! This does look a bit 60's-inspired though. I think it's the hair.

Well, I'm going to relax the rest of tonight and use my brain in very small amounts. Happy Friday everyone!
