Dragon Con 2014: Josie and the Pussycats Costume
Happy Friday! It's time to spam you with many angles of my Josie costume from Dragon Con. Actually there are only 5 pictures here so you can deal with it, I'm sure. I absolutely loved wearing this costume around the convention. The perfect fit created by my mom was a lot of that reason. Plus leopard print is kind of my thing. I'd like to think if I started a girl group we'd wear leopard print leotards too. But anyway, this whole look is brought to you by my talented mom. She can make things and that's pretty awesome. Especially since this outfit looks just like the cartoon minus the shoes (and she didn't make the shoes because she's not a cobbler.) When it's time to wear a costume, knowing someone who can sew and do hair comes in really handy! Thanks mom!

I'll show you more pictures from Dragon Con tomorrow and tell you all about it. Today I just wanted to show off this costume! I had a lot of people stop me to take my picture when I wore this. One photographer kept telling me how perfect I was as Josie. I also randomly entered the Page to Stage costume contest wearing this. I didn't win but it was a really fun experience. Now I know how to prepare for the next time I enter one!

I hope you had a good week! I've been job hunting and expanded my search to Chicago because why not? I always thought it'd be fun to live there for a while. (Shameless call for help ahead. Proceed with caution.) If you know of anybody hiring anything digital media, communications, social media, digital marketing, and/or children's media related let me know. I have a master's degree in mass communication but I'm having a hard time finding anything that doesn't require 3-5 years of "professional" experience. I've listened to ten thousand pieces of the same advice already so please spare me unless it's something novel. I love you guys. That is all.
I'm heading out to Athens this evening to spend some time with Jeanie and experience The Great PumpkinFest at Terrapin Brewery. Fall foods and beverages are my favorite ever so I'm pretty excited. This won't occur if it gets rained out though, so we'll see!
Have a great start to your weekend!

I wish I could help you on the job front. I'm struggling with it right now, too. Excellent marks in uni, two degrees, but lacking in the experience department. Everyone keeps telling me to intern or work for free to build up experience but I hate the idea of selling my skills for nothing, it sucks. Don't really have advice for you, but I wish you much, much luck on your hunt!

And I know where you're coming from on the job front. I had a six month bout of unemployment a few years ago, just literally applying anywhere to break into professional journalism. I had loads of intern and freelance experience, but stepped away from writing for a year, which I think really hurt my prospects. My mantra after awhile was "it only takes one", because I lost count of my rejections/non responses.
Eventually, a newspaper five hours away took me on as a paid intern, and then hired me full time a couple months later. It wasn't my dream job, or place, but it was a start. I ended up finding a better job closer to home a year later, thanks to my experience at the first place.
I would take the experience factor with a grain of salt. I would say apply for stuff that says two years professional experience, especially if you have student activities and/or internships to back it up. Working that way, a lot of people called me back that I wasn't expecting to. Those experience numbers are usually just guidelines.
And if you're serious about Chicago, you might want to consider moving there first. I know that's kinda extreme, but I'm sure preference is given to local applicants for a lot of positions, and you could get acclimated to the people and the region. I don't have experience in this personally, but have friends that have done it.
Sorry for the essay. I can just really relate! Let me know if you need any other words of encouragement. Best wishes on your search!
